Engr Almuntasir Ibrahim Alhussaini has this to say:

In my humble opinion I think people are really
exaggerating when it comes to condemnation of
Maulid celebration not because they want to do
justice but simply because of religion politics and
their personal persuations. And if I were to do
justice to those who support it I would simply take
the stand of great men like Ibn Taimiya or Ibn Hajr
Al-athqalani.
Basically, Maulid is not fard (mandatory/obligatory)
muslims do not observe salatul eid on it…Maulid is
all about glorifying the Prophet SAW by Reading his
sira (Biography and history), Reading Quraan and
Hadeeth of the messenger of Allah, Reading poets
and praises about the messenger of Allah
s.a.w…Anything contrary to that or to the
fundamental teachings of Isalm is not Maulid and
should be boldly condemned and rejected.
Even thou I am just a plain ignorant, I expect
anyone claiming something is Haram or Bidaa to
have some knowlege of Usulul Fiqh (the science of
analysis of the origins, sources, and principles upon
which Islamic jurisprudence is based) and also to
know what is Bida’a and what is Sunnah (in the real
context).
For Instance,
An opposer might quote the Hadith:”If anyone
introduces in our matter something which does not
belong to it, will be rejected”—Sahih Muslim
And a supporter might say Prophet Muhammad
SAW said what means: “The one who innovates a
good innovation in Islam has its reward and a
reward similar to those who follow him in without
lessening their reward. The one who innovates an
innovation of misguidance would be sinful for it and
has sins similar to those who follow him in it–until
the Day of Judgment”—Sahih Muslim
To avoid confusion or injustice we refer to the
science of usulul-fiqh, In the scale of Usulul deen
under the chapter regarding orders and prohibitions
there is a Principle wich says:
ﺇﻧﻤﺎﻳﻨﻜﺮﺍﻟﻤﺘﻔﻖ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﻭﻻﻳﻨﻜﺮ ﺍﻟﻤﺨﺘﻠﻒ ﻓﻴﻪ
1-“Rebuking an opinion is reserved for what is
agreed upon, and not where there exists
(legitimate) differences.”
ﺍﻟﺘﺮﻙ ﻻ ﻳﻔﻴﺪ ﺍﻟﺤﻜﻢ ﺑﺬﺍﺗﻪ
2- Meaning, that the Prophet or his companions
(ra), leaving something does NOT make its absence
forbidden ( a ruling in itself) unless it was clearly
addressed by revelation as being forbidden or
disliked.
Therefor, the scholars of Islam like an-Nawaiy and
al-hafidh Ibn Hajar and others said that innovation
(Bidaah) is of two types one that does not comply
with Qur’an and Sunnah and that is rejected, and
one that complies with Qur’an and Sunnah which is
accepted in Islam such as Mawlid celebration,
Ramadan Tafseer, Musabaqa, Waazin Kasa
etc….these are all innovations nor the Rasul SAW
nor the Sahabas nor the Tabi’um did them but we
are now practicing them because they are not in
contradiction with the fundamental teachings of
Islam some have even become a necessity.
A Bad bidaas/Sunnas is anything that contradicts
the fundamental teachings of islam both in Aqida
and Ibada like saying Quraan is a creature, Aqida of
khawarij (Claiming that committing a kabair sin
removes one from Islam, Claiming a new revelation
or a new form of salat or siyam or hajj other than
what is in the Sunna…..And a lot more.
Now, Lets Move to Expressing Happiness on
Maulid day.
A good place to start would be SURAT yunus Allah
SWT says: ‘In the bounty of Allah and in His mercy
– in that let them rejoice, it is better than what they
accumulate (Yunus: 58)”. Allah commanded us to
rejoice in His mercy, and the Prophet MUHAMMAD
SAW was the GREATEST of all His mercies, as
Allah says (that which translates as): “And We have
not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a MERCY
to the worlds.” (Al-Anbiyaa’: 107)…If you still doubt
that MUHAMMAD SAW is the Mercy of Allah to the
worls then you really need to work on your Imaan
honestly.
Imam al-Baihaqi transmits from Anas RA that the
Noble Prophet s.a.w performed his own Aqiqa in
the period after the proclamation of Prophethood.
This was in spite of the fact the his grandfather,
Abdul Muttalib ra, had already performed the Aqiqa
on the seventh day after the birth, and Aqiqa is
done only once and is not done a second time.
From this it is understood that the Noble Prophet
s.a.w did this to show his GRATITUDE to Allah
Ta’ala for causing him to be born, having made him
“the mercy unto all the worlds”.
When I think of why the Sahaba didn’t celebrate
Mawlid the answer is very clear: they didn’t need
to. They had the Prophet saw there with them as a
living, breathing reality. Their hearts were filled with
love for him. We on the other hand have our daily,
hectic lives and are centuries away from his
presence. And just like the Sahaba didn’t hold large
conferences because they didn’t need them for
imaan boosters or to sell Islamic wares. And just
like they didn’t send their children to schools based
on modern/western theory, And just like they didn’t
hold annual ramadan tafseer, musaqa or WAAZIN
KASA because they weren’t necessary the same
holds for Mawlid gathering. A need arose among
the Ummah generations after the Prophet saw
passed in order to REVIVE our love for him. Just as
a need has arisen for many other practices common
amongst the Muslims these days.
The Prophet s.a.w himself glorified his birthday,
due to his reply when asked why he fasted on
Mondays: “I was BORN on this day and started
receiving the revelation on it.” (Sahih Muslim).
So how on earth would you want us to claim that
the day Prophet S.A.W was born is insignificant?
Apparently the prophet s.a.w wouldnt have
mentioned it at all if it is insignificant to him……
(wa ma yantiqu anil hawa in huwa illa wahyun yuha)
Allah’s greatest favor on mankind was the birth of
the Holy Prophet saw and in pure Maulid gathering
we show our thanks to Allah by reciting Qur’an,
dhiker, teaching about the Prophet, saying salat and
salam on the Prophet which has great rewards!! and
every good muslim knows that all these activities
comply with the Qur’an and Sunnah ANY act
contrary to these is not Maulid and be rejected
entirely.
In conclusion let me state it clear to you that No
event in human history compares with the day in
which MY MASTER MUHAMMAD s.a.w came into
this world. If that is not worth celebrating then???
